In September 2016, Troop 73 helped our Charter Organization, Parker United Methodist Church, to host four homeless families. Partnered with the Family Promise program, Parker UMC is one of a number of churches and other organizations that provide homeless families a place to sleep and meal for a week at a time, three times a year. In addition to a place to stay, Family Promise provides the families skills training and support in finding permanent housing.
Troop 73 learned to set up the frames and tarps to transform the church’s social hall into temporary sleeping quarters. The Scouts also marked the poles, connectors, and tarps so that any group could do the set up in the future. Additionally, the troop families hosted the first dinner. At the end of the week the Scouts also took down the temporary walls returned the social hall to it’s normal configuration. As the Scouts were finishing their tasks, they learned the good news…two of the four families found permanent housing.
